Socio-economic impact assessment study

The aeronautics industry is a constantly growing sector of excellence in Europe, generating an estimated 534,000 jobs and growing at around 4% per annum. Over the next 20 years the industry anticipates a requirement for 40,000 new aircraft – excellent news for Europe's aviation and related industries, but prompting questions of environmental impact and bringing new focus on the industry's societal obligations.

Importantly, this growth opportunity hasn't gone unnoticed in emerging markets - which makes it crucial for Europe to leverage its leadership in aeronautical innovation in order to maintain a competitive edge.

This is where Clean Sky comes in. By fostering and coordinating research and innovation, avant-garde technologies can be developed and integrated into full-scale demonstrators in order to reach a high readiness level for future implementation into new products.

The socio-economic impact of the Clean Sky initiative is also measured through the acceleration it provides to the market implementation of new products, stemming from its successful technical activities and favourable impact on job creation.

Clean Sky 1 started in 2008 and counts over 600 participating entities from 24 countries, including SMEs, research centres and academia. With one year still to go, Clean Sky is already delivering demonstrators resulting in significant reductions in CO2, gas emissions and noise levels - with clear socio-economic benefits for society at large.

Endorsing Clean Sky 1’s phenomenal success, a follow-up, Clean Sky 2, was launched in 2014. It has already had 4 Calls for Proposals and recruited some 200 participating entities.
